The town of Denver City was founded
as an oil field boom town in 1939. At that time Shell
Western E & P Inc. began drilling the Wasson Field. In
April 1997, the Permian assets belonging to Shell and
Amoco formed, naming the new company Altura Energy,
Ltd. In 2000 Occidental Permian Ltd.(OXY) bought out
Altura Energy and OXY is who owns and operates the
majority of the oil field here today.
From 1977 to 1980, Yoakum County was the number one oil
producing county in the United States. The oil industry
accounts for about seventy-five percent of Denver City’s
economy. From a field of forty-four square miles
surrounding the city, there is an approximate daily
production of 250,000 barrels of crude oil.
Denver City is also at the center of
the world’s largest CO-2 project, with three plants
built and operational in the mid 80’s.
Over the years, Denver City has
developed into a thriving agricultural center producing
cattle, cotton, maize, peanuts, watermelons, and
vegetables.
The construction of a major new
electric power generating plant located 4 miles east of
Denver City, Mustang Station, began in April of 1998.
It was developed by Denver City Energy Associates, a
partner of L.S. Power, LLC of New Jersey, and
Amarillo-based Quixx Corporation, an affiliate of
Southwestern Public Service Company.
A new industrial development, State
Rubber and Environmental Solutions, began production on
May 5, 2004. State Rubber uses a process of recycling
used tires to make a product that is primarily used for
track resurfacing, road resurfacing, and molded rubber
products.
Another major employer is our local
state of the art hospital, Yoakum County Hospital
(YCH). Along with West Texas Medical Center, it is
currently home to numerous physicians whose specialties
include family practice, surgery, internal medicine,
pediatrics, obstetrics, and nephrology. West Texas
Lifestyles and Rehab Center opened in 2004 and offers
our citizens the finest fitness center in this part of
the state. Dialysis Services of West Texas also opened
its doors in 2004, providing excellent service and
quality health care for dialysis patients throughout the
region. |
